Online Trauma Therapy in Arizona for Emotionally Unsafe Relationships
I provide online trauma therapy throughout Arizona for adults who are struggling with the effects of emotionally unsafe relationships, emotional neglect, emotional abuse, and other experiences that have made it difficult to trust themselves.
You may know that something feels off without knowing exactly why. You may question your memories, second-guess your reactions, feel responsible for other people's emotions, or struggle to know what you actually feel and need.
Many people who come to therapy do not have a clear explanation for these patterns. They may not know whether what they experienced was emotional neglect, emotional abuse, trauma, or simply a relationship that did not feel emotionally safe.
You do not need to know what to call your experience before beginning therapy.
Therapy can help you understand where these patterns came from, recognize how they continue to affect you, and gradually rebuild trust in yourself.
These patterns can develop in relationships where your emotions were dismissed, your perceptions were questioned, your needs were overlooked, or you learned that keeping other people comfortable was necessary to maintain connection.
Over time, you may begin to distrust your own judgment, emotions, memories, needs, and boundaries.
Who This Work Is For
You may have spent years believing you were too sensitive, too emotional, too difficult, or somehow the problem.
You may be functioning well on the outside while privately questioning yourself, feeling guilty in relationships, or struggling to understand why certain situations affect you so strongly.
You do not need a diagnosis or a perfect explanation of what happened to begin therapy.
Therapy may be a good fit if you:
-
Grew up with emotional neglect, emotional abuse, or chronic invalidation
-
Were raised by emotionally unavailable, highly critical, controlling, or unpredictable caregivers
-
Experienced parentification or felt responsible for other people's emotional needs
-
Experienced relationships involving gaslighting, manipulation, coercive control, or other forms of emotional abuse
-
Constantly question your own judgment or wonder whether you're overreacting
-
Feel guilty when you set boundaries or prioritize your own needs
-
Monitor other people's emotions before checking in with your own
-
Feel anxious, hypervigilant, emotionally shut down, or disconnected in close relationships
-
Struggle to know what you actually feel, want, or believe

How Emotionally Unsafe Relationships Can Shape the Way You See Yourself
The effects of emotionally unsafe relationships do not always feel like trauma.
You may recognize them instead as anxiety, perfectionism, people-pleasing, emotional numbness, difficulty with boundaries, relationship problems, or an ongoing feeling that something is wrong with you.
Often, these patterns developed as ways of adapting to relationships in which your emotional safety, connection, or sense of self felt uncertain.
You may notice yourself:
-
Replaying conversations and analyzing what you should have said
-
Feeling guilty after setting even reasonable boundaries
-
Questioning your memory or interpretation of what happened
-
Ignoring your own intuition when someone else's needs conflict with yours
-
Monitoring other people's moods before noticing your own
-
Feeling responsible for keeping relationships calm
-
Becoming emotionally numb or disconnected when conflict arises
-
Struggling to know what you actually want
-
Needing reassurance before trusting your own decisions
These responses once helped you adapt to relationships that did not consistently feel emotionally safe.
In therapy, the goal is not to judge or eliminate these responses. It is to understand what they were protecting you from and develop enough internal and relational safety that you have more choices in how you respond.

My Approach
My approach combines relational therapy with nervous-system-informed treatment.
Rather than focusing only on reducing symptoms, therapy looks at the relationships and experiences that shaped the ways you learned to protect yourself.
Together, we work toward understanding those patterns while developing a stronger sense of safety, choice, and trust in your own experience.
Because therapy is provided online, we can do this work from wherever you are located in Arizona. You don't need to travel to Scottsdale or live near a therapy practice that specializes in relational trauma.
The goal is not simply to understand what happened in the past. It is to experience yourself differently in the present.
As you develop greater trust in yourself, you may begin to:
-
Trust your own perceptions without needing immediate reassurance
-
Recover from conflict without replaying it for hours
-
Set boundaries without automatically assuming you have done something wrong
-
Recognize emotionally unsafe dynamics earlier
-
Stay connected to yourself when someone else is upset
-
Identify what you actually feel, need, and want
-
Make decisions with greater confidence
